PS4 costs $1,850 in Brazil

Uh, they say that
The discrepancy is due to import fees and taxes, which make up between 60 and 70 percent of the cost
? Where does the shipment of PS4 units come from anyway and why would it become much more costly than the Xbox One? Does the Brazilian government charge more taxes and fees on the PS4 than the Xbox One?

That's insane. I feel bad for the Brazilian people, I hope Sony finds a way to fix this for them. Has it always been this way, though? How have they been managing to buy all other consoles all this time if their customs are this douchey?

Ouch. I googled the minimum wage in Brazil, and it's only 3 US dollars. So I guess this is different than places like Australia where things are more expensive because of a higher minimum wage.

That is ridiculous. I can't imagine spending that much money for a gaming system. Gaming systems are barely worth $400 in my opinion. The only reason I think that is because I barely play video games nowadays. Their games are even expensive. I can't imagine the different impact games would have in the United States, if they were that expensive. Very interesting post my friend!

It sounds bad, in reality, Brazil is in the middle of big problems at the minute, as someone said in an earlier post the majority of the cost is tax and its not like Sony are just charging a fortune for no reason! It makes me wonder what the true cost of the console is if you take out taxes in other countries around the world?!?

That's insane!!!! I can't believe they have to pay that much, they shouldn't be treated like that. The PS4 should cost the same no matter where you're getting it.

Sony explains Brazil's high prices of PS4

NPR blog is running an interesting article about why the prices of PS4 are so high in Brazil, compared to other countries. As the blog says, "Of the $1,845 price, 63 percent goes toward paying import taxes that are imposed on the PlayStation 4 when it's imported to Brazil". It also includes a graph, and more in-depth info.

Sadly, as of now, I can't post links, so I can't direct you to the article.. but googling "Sony Explains Why Its PlayStation 4 Costs $1,845 In Brazil NPR" should get you the result. :)

Really? I don't understand that high prices in a PPP of 12000$. I don't think many people is going to buy it unless they're rich.
I don't know why they don't set a price depending on the GPA or something like that.
It's not fair that Americans can buy it for less while they're earning more (on average).
Let's wait and see what happens then.

A country with a low per capita income and the console is the most expensive in the world there. Heck, you can get a used car here in India for that much money or a beyond insane gaming PC. Damn it, that's slightly less than an year's rent I pay here and I live quite comfortably.

Its these moments in the international economics world where I say what the what the heck heck. Either they make tons of inflated money or no money, I don't know enough about economics to know for sure, but I do know that, that's very messed up.

Not surprised about this.
It's normal, everything that's not produced in Brazil gets extremely overpriced on the stores, it's cheaper for them to buy plane tickets so they can buy an iPhone in American than buying it at a retail store, the same goes for PlayStations. Sad reality.

Some people are under the impression that this is Sony's choice. Products made outside of the Brazil have m***ive taxes added to them so that the country's people will buy a majority of things that are made by Brazil, keeping the money and jobs in the country. It's a fine idea, awful for non pc gamers though.
