What would sell you on the PS4?

Assuming you haven't already picked up the console, and are on the fence about picking it up, or even are against buying one, what's the one killer app that would sell you on the console? What's that one thing you feel is missing from the console, which you feel needs to be announced before you'll give Sony your hard earned money?

I'm not on the fence about the PS4. I'll say here and now that I definitely want one! As someone who has had all three previous Playstation consoles, it's a no-brainer.

So, what would sell me on it? What needs to be announced for me to take the plunge? It's a simple answer – a price reduction. Once the prices start to dip and when there’s better value bundles on the market that don't cost the equivalent of getting on for twice the value of our mortgage payment, I'll be buying one. I'll say that here and now. The console needs to dip comfortably down into the £200's and the bundles around the £300/350 mark. I do have a £50 Amazon gift voucher from last Christmas still unused which will take a chunk of it’s value off, but it’s still currently above the value I'm willing to pay for it, even if you subtract that £50.

Apps…?! I play a games console to play games. I slot in the disc, sit back and play. That's it…! The other unfathomable bits and pieces today's generation of consoles don't really interest me in the slightest and it does worry me at how they're being heavily pushed, now. Features such as online compatibility often mean subscriptions – yet more regular expense just to make them work. No thanks!

I fully appreciate those who think it's decent value as I know most use many of it’s added garish. It just doesn’t interest me or simply put it, goes over my head. I don't know how you go about getting it online, creating accounts, downloading e.t.c… To me, it's something that seems to have 'twigged' in everyone else's head but has just bypassed me entirely. For what I want it for, a simple games console, it's just too expensive as things stand. I can't justify it's £340-360 price tag – which is just the console on it's own here in the UK…

I've also suggested here in the past that perhaps Sony should consider introducing a 'PS4 Lite'. A console that simply plays PS4 games and DVD's/Blueray… I'd happily plump for one of those instead if there was ever such a thing…

LOL @Haymansafc - the PS4 is less than 1/2 my mortgage payments you lucky devil you!

The PS4 is really cheap compared to the PS3 at launch.

Yeah I agree with Msadcat, the price of PS4 is very good compared to last gen.

I want only games. History shows that Sony is good on that part and it proved it in the last 3 gens, so I assume they will continue to have brilliant games with PS4.

Haha! It depends on what percentage of your income it makes up…! It makes up a fair chunk of mine and that's not my only outgoing!

The PS4 is better value than what the PS3 was at launch. There’s no doubt about that. One of the reasons I'm also holding back as that I was early to buy both the PS2 and PS3 and did feel ripped off inside a year – when all sorts of deals were then coming out, followed by fairly substantial price reductions. I'm determined for that not to happen this time and I’ll happily sit back and wait. Unfortunately on this occasion it appears that Sony has seen fit to artificially limit supply (sorry, but I don't believe their story of 'unprecedented demand') to keep prices higher for longer. Two can play the waiting game, Sony…

The PS4 is also decent value – if you use all of it’s features. I know for a fact I won’t. I'll certainly give this online business a try, but it’ll end in one of two ways. I won’t be able to hook it up online and not being 'technical', I won’t be able to resolve it. Alternatively, I will be able to get it online but immediately halted in my tracks when I come across the word ‘subscription’ in order to make a lot of it's perks actually work. More, regular expense?! No thanks…! This means it’ll be used as my Playstation always has been – a plug in and play console, where the word ‘multiplayer’ to me means bringing a friend around with a second controller. With this in mind, I’m sure you can understand why I feel £350-odd for just the basic console is an awful lot of money to spend…!

Several years have passed between now and the launch of the PS3 – when money didn’t have the same level of importance as it does to me now. Circumstances and priorities have changed. I’m no longer a regular gamer – I’m more ‘casual’ than anything, where I can count my annual game purchases on one hand. I’ve only actually bought five between the start of 2012 and now for instance… Barring weekends, I don’t really play any more. Again, this also would make the current price expensive considering it would only be used once or twice a week.

I just hope this helps to clarify my point! It may be a decent value console for those who are regular gamers and are technologically minded enough to use all of it’s features. I certainly wouldn’t argue against it. I'm in a different boat though!

The PS4 is cheaper than PS3,PS2 and PS1 consoles at launch. (at least here in AUS) Even NOT taking into account time and inflation.
At the $400 launch price ($550 here in AUS) its the cheapest any Sony console was at launch. So to anyone that bought the PS4 as their first console consider yourselves extremely lucky it was an still is,so cheap.

It's cheap as hell and will last you at least 5 or 6 years. It's a pretty good all-in-one entertainment system but not to the extent as the XBone. You get free games and stuff. Oh and the game are nice looking and things.

I just really want more bundles but also want them to somehow lower the price so i can buy more games with the console!
Also, would love to see some more exclusives on the console aswell to lean me away from the Halo 5 bundle for the Xbox one.

The titles on the Xbox interest me more than the ones on the PS4 so far, but that might change in the long term.

So more games would be a great thing to have.

I'm already sold, thanks to Bloodborne and PS systems always get the niche Japanese games (like anything by NIS and games like Persona, for example). The issue, however, is that I don't have the ability to buy a PS4 anytime soon, due to lack of funds sooo... yeah..

I was on the fence about getting the console but I will tell you that I think that I will be getting it really soon. I think that the reason that I really want to get the console b-[is because the quality of the graphics on the console. From the videos that I have watched on the console I will tell you that they have really good quality in the graphics department on many of the game that I see them advertising for games that are on the Xbox one. One think that I can see is that the Sony has focused more on video gaming and Microsoft has focused more on making us a bit more lazy in life.

Who ever is thinking between X1 and PS4 I can say from my experience that PS4 is centuries better than X1. Sure if you like all that gimmicks X1 has, you can go with that, but if you consider yourself a gamer than PS4 is way to go. It's the small things that make PS4 better. Like any M$ product X1 was making me pull my hair. I truly believe that M$ are invaders from outer space trying to kill humans by giving them strokes and hearth attacks.

The X1 does seem to be getting the best exclusives currently, like D4 and I think something from Platinum Games. Sure there's like... Bloodborne but yeah.

That said the system itself does feel inferior and the 360 also had most exclusives until it lost them all and was stuck with Halo, Forza and Gears once tge PS3 picked.

Honestly, both new systems might just be repeating tge history of their predecessors. Sony starting out weak in the games department but then surpassing the competition. Microsoft starting with lots of exclusives but then losing them. I think that's what's gonna happen, we will see.

Exclusives don't bother me and the word exclusive seems to be meaning a lot less these days.

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare was an Xbox Exclusive, followed by PC and now coming to PS4. I can actually see a handful of games now that are starting out as exclusives but then going to PC and with that, usually that means the PS4 isn't too far behind.

I do agree though, history might repeat itself.

If my understanding is correct, don't you only get free games if you have a Playstation Plus account that you subscribe to? If so, you're actually paying for them in that continuous subscription charge…! Nothing in this world comes for free…! As someone who has never ventured online with my PS3, I could very well be wrong about this and will stand corrected if necessary.

Like ash2014uk, I'm waiting for better bundles to come along and I still believe we will probably see the start of them before the year is out. I'm not even bothering looking until at least the back end of September due to other financial commitments in the meantime. That's when I'll start seriously shopping around. For instance, if I'm to pay in the region of £400 for a bundle (most are at this price or upwards of this to the best of my knowledge), I'd expect a few games thrown in for that price. Not just one. Or if it's just the one game, maybe a price tag at the £300-350 mark – about the value the standard console on it's own is in the UK as things stand. I really don't want to pay much more than £250 for the bare/basic console. That's my aim as things stand (obviously subject to change). As I've said before, I do have a £50 Amazon voucher from last Christmas which still remains unused. That'll take the 'sting' away but as things stand even using that, it's still more than what I'm willing to pay.

Again, I don't deny the PS4's value even as things stand for those who use them regularly and/or online, but for my own use as a simple plug in and play console that’ll get used maybe a couple of times a week, it's just too expensive. I want to give this online malarkey a try just to see (mainly for DLC's) but for someone who has very little interest in multiplayer titles and has no intention of signing up to subscriptions, there's only so much it'll be useful to me for… This is why I say if there was ever a 'PS4 Lite', a PS4 that has the same basic ability for disc gaming without the added garnish, I'd happily go for that over the full-blown model...

In situations like that where exclusive Xbox games interest me – I simply 'cheat' and watch a walkthrough of it on YouTube as and when I have the spare time. If it interests me, I'll watch most of not all the game. If I don't think it's much good, then I'll probably only watch a couple of hour's worth, just to give it a fair chance…

The Xbox One does have the better exclusives as things stand. I think most of the sensible posters amongst us will happily accept that. It has been a very slow start for the PS4 on that front, but I have little doubt it’ll catch up and properly pass it's rival in another twelve months. To be fair though, exclusives isn't everything to a console for me and it doesn't even cross my mind as someone who has yet to get a PS4. It'll be a PS4 that I'll buy and that's the end of the discussion! For instance going to back to my YouTube comment above, I watched about forty minutes of Titanfall and was bored for most of that time…

True.
So infact they are not truly free and I think most of us know that but we all still refer to them as free here on the forum, and Im sure pretty much most people everywhere else does too.

I'll be picking up a PS4...eventually. Maybe it's because I haven't been paying all that much attention, but I haven't really seen a game that really makes me want to drop the money to get a PS4. When I do, hopefully they'll be a bundle available, because I'm cheap.

On the other hand, what would really sell me on the Xbox 1 would be if Halo 5 brings back support to the competitive community. Also, the new Halo compilation sounds absolutely amazing.

the last of made me be like ''i NEED a ps4 for remastered'', and all the upcoming ubisoft games this year and next at e3

Already bought a Ps4, but what I would really love is if they made Collection Discs of previous generation games like Assassin's Creed Collection or Infamous Collection or Uncharted or other AAA title really. Or they could make remastered versions of those games like the Last Of Us, GTAV, tomb raider, injustice, and so on and so forth. Basically just re-release all the previous AAA titled games from the current gen consoles to the PS4 and I'll be a happy camper.
