Optical drive question

cheapskate

New Member
Hello everyone.
I bought a broken PS4 for $80.. I found the issue disk is not reading. So I took upon myself to rip it all apart to find the issue an found the problem broken spindle on the optical drive so I need to whole part.
So.. my question is are they all the same proprietary drive (AGPtek KES-490) or are there different types?
Because I'm not seeing a serial code on it.

I just did a quick search for you. Seems like there's different drives for different regions. Where are you?

Unfortunately, it will probably be hard to find just the spindle. And if you did, it would be more trouble than it's worth to replace it with all the little parts and whatnot. Would just be worth it to just replace the whole drive bay.

I did find this for you. Though I'm not all that familiar with the PS4 part numbers since mine hasn't crapped out on me yet, lol

Also found this site that sells parts but they come up without any rating on Web of Trust and I'm not familiar with them so can't verify their validity for you. They look like a wholesaler.

Though for 80 bucks for the console and then 70 (according to the ebay listing) for the drive bay, for 150 total investment, that's a pretty good deal. And that guy you bought it from probably would have just thrown it away. It's fun fixing things :)

One other thing, make sure the parts match your model of PS4. You can find that easily by the serial number. Parts from one PS4 model will not work with another. So do your research.

I'm glad everything worked out for you. And to think, most people would have whined and bought a new console ;) In my experience when electronics break its a simple part that can be replaced. What did it end up costing you?

$66.86 shipped for the part.
Playing on it currently not having one issue.
Just want to state if anyone is considering taking on this task.. Make sure you open up the optical drive an switch out the logic board as if you don't your new board will need flashed to work with a new console.
