Did you have any problems?

Similar to my regrets thread, have you had any issues with your PS3 over the years? The fabled Yellow Light of Death? Console just straight up melting? Controller 'accidentally' went flying through a television screen?

Come one, come all and tell us how badly your PS4 treated you over the years. And how many you've had to go through of course.

I had a PS3 just die on me about 4 years in. No breathetaking story. It just stopped working and I went to buy another.

I think I even just started a game, so I didn't even lose data.

Bought the PS3 80GB Fat Killzone 2 pack in April 2009.
Still have it and dont recall ever having any probs with it.Except for running out of HDD space  (never changed the HDD,still using the original 80GB)

Well, I just had a game I downloaded fail to install because the data was corrupted. What a load of crap it is that I have to redownload the whole damn thing now, a good download manager would just redownload the corrupted bits instead of making me redownload it all...

But yeah, that's really about it.

I still have my original PS3 and it is still working just like it was the day I got it. It has outlived two Xbox 360's that I have owned that died on me. When I first heard about the Yellow Light of Death I was a bit worried that it would happen to me but luckily I haven't had any issues.

I’ve had no issue with my PS3 since purchase – and mine’s a fairly early one. I’m also still using it’s original controller that it come with. The only ‘problem’ it has is an age related one where the charging wire plugs into the front of the controller. The steel connector has started to lightly pit with corrosion. Other than that, absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it. I think it’s only crashed on a few occasions too. It’s been a really decent, solid console for me.

I will admit that my PS3 has been in semi-retirement for the past few years, though…

The only thing which I don't like about it is having to touch and hold the 'on/off' button for a few seconds to make it turn off. If I had a pound for every time it's just restarted or made those three peeps, I'd be half-way to being a millionaire by now. It's by far it's most irritating feature. Just turn off…! Why it can be just a simple switch or button like in the old days I don't know… Too fussy for it's own good. Is the PS4 any different/better in this respect?

That's only on older PS3s, right? I have a Slim (the Uncharted 3 GOTY bundle) and the button turns it on or off, no need to hold. Just press once.

I only got my PS3 back in October of last year so haven't had it long enough to have any troubles with it. That and the fact I haven't played it since December lol

The console? The occasional freeze every now and then with certain games, but aside from that the console has been good.

The controllers I've had a few issues with. I've got two now (had three) and the two I have a faulty. One has an absolute fit every time you turn it on (randomly presses buttons on it's own even when I'm not touching it. The other only works at full battery power. If it drops below 2, I have to plug it in and when it's plugged in, it constantly switches itself off.

Think it may be time to grab a new DS3!

Did you try talking to Sony about it? I mean, I know it's probably out of warranty, but you should try your luck anyway.

Happened the same way for me as well. Poof and it was gone; no warning and no sentimental good byes with it.

Mine freezes or lags every now and then. Usual headache with any electronics. Though my PS3 did die once. My laser wore out and was getting disc read errors. A few days online researching and discovered the laser tends to burn out after a while. Found the part on Amazon and ordered it. Though I was able to nurse it along until it came in by tilting the console up when I put the disc in and it was reading. Don't know why it worked but it did for a little bit.

Disappointing that mine died but it does happen and things are not made nearly as well as they used to be. Not surprising, companies will make their money any way that they can.

Bought my in 09 and has been perfect since this year, now the drive doesn't read disks. Looks like I will have to replace the drive and fix the laser -_-. Wish I had it under warranty, much easier than doing it yourself. I may find a shop to repair it for me just so I don't screw up.

Surprisingly I didn't, even though my room was about a hundred degrees sometimes in the summer, I didn't have any problems. A friend of mine had his straight up melt though. Sad day.

Can definitely do that to be safe but it really isn't too bad to pull it apart. You just need to pay attention to what you are doing and organize the parts by section so you remember where they go (bunch of little parts). But if you find a good step by step guide online to your particular model, its not hard. I had my laptop with YouTube next to my work space then followed the guide step by step and reversed the steps when I was done. Easy peasy :)

My only other advice is to research the exact laser for your model. Sony used lots of different lasers that aren't interchangable. Once you find the part, search on Amazon for it. I got mine for 30 bucks. Or if you really want an easy job, just get the whole tray assembly. Closer to 80 I think for the whole thing but you don't need to deal with the many little parts of the tray assembly to get to the faulty laser (there's a lot, lol).

I will say that I am thankful that my PS3 has not failed on me since the the day that I had gotten it. I have had for over 4 years now and I am glad to say that the console had been working just as good as when I had gotten it. Fingers crossed though because I do not want to jinx it.

So was the extra part you bought the laser? Or a new drive completely? I would prefer to do it myself and save money but obviously as a novice I am a little scared I might screw it up completely. I think I need to research it some more to know that is the actual fault is maybe by calling Sony support to reaffirm my initial evaluation of it. Then I can research the replacement I need. Did you do yours successfully or was it a bit dodgy?

I bought just the laser but I've torn apart computers and my PS2 so I had experience. You need to isolate the problem before you tear it apart. If its not reading discs its a disc read error and the laser is most likely the culprit. Look on the back of your PS3 and next to the serial number is the model number. What is that? May help narrow down since certain models have certain common issues.

Alright I checked my PS3 and it looks like my model number is CECHK03 so I suppose some googling will help. Can't do much more tonight though :/.
