Hello. Want to get back into gaming, and eyeing the PS4. Remembering the old PS and PS2 I had, pop in a disc and start playing. Not interested in online playing. Just purchase a game and play. I like the Uncharted 4 and Call of Duty that they bundle with some consoles, when available. Or just a console and game, maybe Fallout 4. Both I see locally. I have heard about patches that have to be downloaded to play on some games to function properly. I dont really want my PS4 to be hooked up to my computer. I know that limits things. But will the PS4 function well just alone. Just purchase, plug in and play. If thats possible these days. Thanks.

Hello RCM, welcome to the Forum. w[:

The PS4 works and you can play games also if it's not connected to the internet.
When you insert the game disc, the installation starts automatically and generally it's very quick.
However, all games installed from a disc require an unpgrade which can be done only by downloading a patch file.
This doesn't mean that the game will not work, but if you do not upgrade it, you will be always prompted by a message that tells you that your game needs to be updated in order to use the online funcions (such as statistics, leader boards, multiplayer sessions, etc.). In addition, the patch files normally fix bugs & glitches.

If you have a wi-fi network in your home, I strongly suggest you to include your console, even if you do not play online, it will increase your game experience and it will keep your system always upgraded. Again, this is not obligatory but very recommended.

We are here to help you if you need further hints.

Alex

P.S.: Fallout 4 is a great game, extremely addicting, watch it out! :grin

Hmm,not sure this is exactly true.
As far as I know as soon as you put the disc in it install and you can start playing. Simple

Hmm,again..not surely thats entirely true.
If your PS4 is connected to the internet you will get a prompt to update games yes..BUT....if your PS4 is not connected you wont get that prompt cause it doesnt know if there's a patch. Not connected.
However yes, patches not only help fixing this this in MP but also single player as well so Id recommened connecting to the internet as well.
Plus you can keep the PS4's firmware always updates to the latest as well.Always good.

I dunno Obe. May not require an upgrade but I can't remember the last time I bought a game on disc that didn't have a Day 1 update ;) Also, if I don't update, I do get pestering messages. You can just keep ignoring them or you can just have your PS4 download patches in the background which is what I normally do. If there's an update, it only impacts a few minutes of game time while it installs.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Looks like I will be connecting to internet to play. The PS4 I can get locally, comes with a downloadable game voucher, so I will to be on the internet, something I didnt want to do, wanted to just to keep things simple, but probably the best thing to do. Just thinking about connections. Question. My router, between the TV and my computer, has a USB port, but it is square, and small about 1/4" square. Would I connect the PS4 there to setup? Im hoping this will be an easy setup. Thanks.

What Im saying is if you are not connected to the internet at all,you wont get any messages asking you to update.Thats my take on it.
But,since RCmonkey just said he will connect then he will get notifications to update so...(also,that is if you stay connected to it)

I think it's not an USB port. It is probably an Ethernet port, which is the one you need to connect your console to the net (USB isn't used for internet connection).
In alternative, if your router is wi-fi enabled, you can connect your PS4 without cables.

The setup is very easy. This is the official Sony page with the instructions:
http://manuals.playstation.net/document/gb/ps4/settings/nw_settings.html

Let us know if you could make it :Onya

Thank's for the picture. Uhm... no. That is a USB port Type-B, used only for data transfer, not suitable for an internet connection.

If you want to connect your console I am afraid you have to buy a new modem/router, with wi-fi and more that one ETH port (normally they have four).

The brand NETGEAR has an excellent value for money:

-Modem/Router
-Router only

They're just an example, but there are many you can choose from, of other brands too.

Let me know :Onya

Thanks for the explanation. This question will show you how much I know on this subject. My router provided by TW Cable, has my internet and my cable. Can I keep using this router, (to have to keep from trying to get my cable working again, dont want to have to get them involved), Get another router, that is connected to both my computer and the Play Station, and then connect from my old Enet (white)plug from my router, into the new router, like shown here, High Speed Internet connection. Can my Computer and PS4 go through 2 routers. Thanks.

That's not the router. That's the cable modem. I have one similar from Optimum (so sorry to hear you have TWC :( ). You'll need a wireless router. Optimum gave me one with an input from the modem and 4 ports on the back. TWC probably provides one for free. Just have to call them. I have my PS2, PS3 and PS4 plugged in directly. Everything else I have (phone, my laptop, my desktop) run through the WiFi. I personally prefer to use Ethernet cables when connecting to a router. Data transfer and connection is more reliable. That and my router is set up near my TV so win win for me :) If you want to buy, in terms of brands, I personally prefer Lynksys. I got a wireless router in college from Lynksys and it still works (and they still make it! I bought it over 10 years ago). Only reason I don't use it is because Optimum gave me one and I forgot the password for the router. And I just moved and didn't have the time to fuss with it. If you buy one, just read the reviews. Like anything, certain models suck and certain models are phenomenal. But, if you don't want to spend money, TWC if it's like Optimum will provide one for free. I personally don't like mine because Optimum forces you to have an open Optimum Hotspot so anyone can connect, slowing down your connection speed. If you don't care, just go with the free one. Plus side of the free one is if it breaks, they'll just give you another one.

Now, after you get the router, set up is a breeze. Follow the manufacturers instructions for the router to set it up. If you get it through the cable company, they'd likely set it up for you. Though, they'll likely charge you for the visit. When I moved, Optimum made me do a house call for the modem and router. I paid 120 bucks to watch the guy plug it in. So avoid it if possible :) Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Now, you take the Cat5 cable and plug it into the back of the PS4 and into the router. Boot up the PS4, go to the internet connection settings and follow the instructions. The PS4 does the work for you. And you're done! From start to finish, only takes a couple minutes and it's super easy.

Thanks for the quick reply, and suggestions. I really dont need to go through all this trouble just for a PS to have internet access. Its not that important to me. I'll just play it as it is. Thanks.

Can I keep using this router...

Yes, you can.

You will need an access point, which is an hardware of extension for modem/routers.

An access point looks like the image below:

netgear_4.jpg

The ETH cable that is now connected to your PC must be plugged into the access point instead (ADSL Internet).
So you have 4 ETH (LAN) ports + 1 Wi-Fi network available.

I think this configuration works easely, but I ask my friends to confirm it, Titan, Oberon?

Picked up a PS4 yesterday, along with an extended warranty, hopefully I wont need that. Along with 2 games. Just by chance, and good timing. I just received a notice from TWC to get a new moderm. They will send me a newer one. Will see how that goes. Thanks for all the help.
