Playstation VR price and release date announced and some details

Oberon

, , The Enforcer, ,
The Playstation VR headset is due October 2016 and retail for about USD $400
About AUD $550 for AUS.
€399 in Europe
£349 in the UK

The Oculous Rift is due later this month for USD $600 and HTC Vive due April for USD $800.
Ofcourse with the PS VR you dont need a PC but runs from a PS4.

Keep in mind you need the PS Camera and Move controllers to use with it as well.
However Sony have confirmed they will also be selling bundles consisting of the VR headset, camera and controller.

A nice bonus is that Playstation VR can play ALL PS4 games, but ofcourse in virtual cinema mode equal to a screen size max of 5 meters at 2.5 meters distance.
Anyone who uses Gear VR, google cardboard or similar plastic headsets knows what I mean.Basically just a giant screen in front of you.
As well as games you can watch movies, and view 360 degree photos.

Excited yet? :Onya

I might pre order today, but not sure yet. If I get in OK, if not OK as its still 6-7 months away.

I pre ordered the Occulus Rift. I think there will be much more VR content available for the PC VR then the playstation as it has been open for developers for quite a long time now. Nice to see there is some competition right out the gate though. The Occulus Rift, HTC Vive and Sony VR all look great, maybe I will need to have more then 1 VR headset!

I went ahead and tried and got in before it sold out minutes later. I don't think my computer is good enough for the PC VR, I looked before and the minimum recommended graphics card costs almost as much as a PS4. I am sure it will be great and higher quality than the PS4 VR.

Hello Richard Keller,
Thank you for shopping with us. You ordered "PlayStation VR Launch Bundle". We’ll send a confirmation when your item ships.

I think more PS4 people will buy it than PC people so in the long run the PS4 user base will be greater hopefully leading to more things???? Maybe just guessing.

Well I think on the PS4 side it is more limited to what comes out for the PS4, whereas on the PC anyone with the know how can develop for it. I think it will move beyond just games and into the realm of social. Not sure how it will go as this technology is just being born and no one knows in which direction it will go.

You know there will be adult stuff, :)I think there already are some things for the inexpensive Samsung VR you use with your phones.

I agree that the computer version will have a lot more variety, they just need to lower the requirements I think so more can use it. I don't know if I can even think of anyone I know that has a computer capable of even using the Rift.

I would rather they not lower the requirements. It takes a lot of horsepower to run VR smoothly in great detail. If they lessened it, well it would not look as good. Eventually PC's will get there, early adopters pay more. My PC was powerful enough to run VR with the i7 and the GTX 970. If VR does not run smoothly, it will not be an enjoyable experience. Imagine lag or stuttering when you are IN the game, will be much worse then just seeing it on a flat screen.

It's so refreshing to actually see some people excited about this like I am. A lot of people I've talked to don't care about it at all and are already bashing it when we don't even know what it's like yet.

Anyways, yes I'm pretty stoked. I got to try the Samsung Gear VR and it was actually pretty awesome for a $100 piece of equipment. I have a lot higher hopes for the PS VR.

The only thing that concerns me is that I had a little anxiety with the Samsung Gear. I also felt a little dizzy after. That might just be because it's new to me. I'm still psyched though, and I am pre-ordering the $500 bundle.

I have been waiting for VR for a very very long time and finally it is here... well almost. I pre ordered the Oculus Rift, should be here in June! I think there will be more possibilities with VR on the PC side then in PS4, but who knows, may end up with a few different VR headsets.

I have the Galaxy S7 edge and Gear VR and for "portable" VR its not bad. I really like where VR is going and quality seems to depend a lot on the apps and videos. I have seen some really nice VR and I have seen somethings that never seem to get in complete focus no matter what you do.

You can experience blurry watery eyes and even some nausea, but that seems to go away once you use the headset a lot. I played one game and almost threw up once, but next time I played it I was OK as I guess time makes you get used to seeing things this way.

Watching Netflix is neat on it. Not 1080p HD quality though good enough to watch and enjoy.

They also had the finals of the NCAA basketball on it. Quality was only a 7 out of 10, but really fun to seem like your there in the middle of things.

About VR like it is now available and how it is going to be in the near future, I don't believe it will have a long story and developement. Imo, it is just a fire which will burn fastly. I think that the reason is because it's dangerous for the health, for the eyes mainly and also, psycologically, I think that just a few people will like to roam around with a mask on the face. I see its story very similar to the 3D cinema, that with those special glasses: a very big success at the beginning but now the halls are almost empty and the people prefers to watch a movie in a classical way, in 2D.

The real VR will happen when the technology can allow to manage & project images in the space, and not on a screen, by using a sort of laser projectors, placed in different places of a room, able to create a net of pixels in mid-air. Much probably we are just in a transition period.

This said, I am very curious about the actual VR anyway and I will try it for sure, but I am not going to invest much money in it because I don't believe in its future, as it is proposed now with the actual technology.

I completely disagree with you, this will not be a flash in the pan trendy technology. VR and AR will change gaming and will change how we work. The technology you are talking about is the holodeck from star trek and it will not be around in yours or mine lifetimes.

There are many people who report being able to use VR comfortably for hours on end. People said the exact same thing about TV, how it was destroying children eyes, said the same about computer monitors and even LED was causing eye strain. It will get better and expand, it is the cusp of a new technology. It will especially change simulators, from racing to flying. No matter how big or how many screens you have, you will never have any sort of immersion because you are aware of the room around you. Countless videos on youtube showing people lose balance and other funny things because their brain is tricked into believing they are really on a roller coaster or walking a plank from skyscraper to the next.

I do not like 3D movies, but the theatres are hardly empty when I do see one in 3D, they are as full as any regular movie. What is dead is home cinema 3D, because 3D is just not impressive on a home TV.

Well I would disagree with that.
Not as impressive? I still love watching 3D movies at home.
The right settings on your TV,perhaps the right TV and also its movie dependant.
Have you seen Avatar and Prometheus at home in 3D? They look awesome, incredible depth..no cheesy out of screen 3D effects needed for these sorts of movies.

But...what I would say is it's more of niche....like VR at the moment...none is dead or will be dying...just more of a niche market maybe...at the moment.

I have both on Blueray 3D and regular and when I do watch them I do not watch in 3D. I have a Panasonic 55" LED, very rich vivid colours, great TV. 3D is just so different at home, at least with the size of TV I have.

I do agree, Avatar and Prometheus were good 3D movies and are the exception in my opinion. I loved Prometheus in 3D, they did an excellent job of using it to give it at the depth and scope and is probably my favourite movie for 3D that I have ever seen in the theatre.

Companies are starting to discontinue 3D tv's and not releasing new models, they are not gone but the demand is not there.

VR is just being born, never before has it been available for the consumer in such quality and form. It is niche because of the price to enter VR, the headset alone is expensive then you must have a beefy PC to handle it. Prices will come down. Demand is high already and they are having trouble getting orders out on time.

I like 3D and have a bunch of 3D BluRays, but I have seen it declining some and can't really remember the last time I watching anything. I think its more a nitch type feature and some will like it and some won't bother. I don't use it much as you "kind of" have to prepare, dim or turn off the lights, close the curtains to block light, get the glasses ready and hope the battery does not die in the middle of something, had that happen.

I am also not sure how well VR will be after the initial oohs and aaahs. You are always going to have the hardcore people loving any kind of new technology and rushing to buy it. I have the Gear VR for the Samsung and the first couple days were fantastic, then a few weeks in I have not been using it as much. I preorder the Playstaion VR and already worrying if the same is going to happen and after the initial wow factor I wasted $400 and hardly use it.

I don't think you wasted your money. I am a supporter of new technologies too. For example, I have been driving a car with a hybrid motor since 10 years. In the year 2008 I bought my iPhone 3G (still using it), when everyone was happy with the Nokia 3310 and the word "smartphone" was not been invented yet. I am happy with my choices and I have no regrets. The technology needs people like us, people available for investing some money and for testing new things, even if only for curiosity. Imo, this is never wasted money.

Regarding VR though, I think you got the point: the WOW factor is very strong but soon we will get annoyed because this is only a transitional product. As a father, I will not buy this type of VR for my sons because I think it's not good for their health (both mental & physical). This is a stuff for adults, not for kids.

The real VR is going to be here in about 15-20 years, maybe less, when the technology will be able to project holograms in the space. It could sound a "Star Trek" vision, I know but... remember the movies of Agent 007 (Sean Connery at that time), who had a satellitar navigator in his car, and it looked like sci-fi to us? Well... it was happening only 30 years ago (I installed my first sat navigator, Alpine branded, on my Jeep, in 2001).

VR and AR will change gaming and will change how we work.

I' ve seen this sentence only now, sorry. I agree with you when you talk about working. Being able to re-create a virtual 3D environment will be very useful to train specialists, machine operators, doctors, astronauts, pilots, etc. and in general less dangerous for those who operate in critical environments. My doubts go only to the entertainment world. About working & professional training I completely agree with you :)

I was just wondering if the Playstation VR will work on a standard PS4 or If it will only work on PS4.5? I guess they haven't actually announced if they are making one but, there is a lot of rumours.
