I LOVE me a good story. It's why i like the uncharted series, The Last of Us, the Walking Dead and a few other games.
However, just played a game that the only way i can desrcibe the writer, dialogue, script of this game as " GENIOUS ". It's without shadow of a doubt THE best story in the medium of gamiing i've ever experienced.
It's not just me either. Here's some direct quotes from reviews on Metaritic.
"Making excellent use of the visual novel medium to tell its story, (---------- ) is a beautifully crafted piece of interactive fiction that blends character drama, sci-fi and critique of popular culture into a compelling and memorable whole."
"Without exaggeration, this is the greatest VN game of all time."
"Some of the best writing and storytelling I have ever experienced in a video game, or any medium for that matter"
"a fantastic "true" ending that may very well move you to tears."
The game is Steins Gate
It's not a game for everyone, as to be honest the first 20 hours were a little confusing as to where you thought the game was going, and the character you play is frankly a bit of an arse! However, if you can stick at it, and keep you mind active with the story, suddenlty about 20 hours in it gets turned on it's head and all of the previous 20 hours make sense as one big fantastic set up for the rest.
The game is a basically a much better presentation of the Back to the Future films and about time travel, quantom physics, and the butterfly effect. It shows how you really shouldn't mess with time, world timelines etc. Even the smallest things have huge ramifications. I've learnt a lot but in a very accessable way. It really makes you think about, well everything.
The game is basically a book. It's not really a visual novel as there aren't too many stunning things to look at. It's all txt reading but the stunning part of this game is that there are 6 endings, superb voice acting, and a dialogue that at times, made me laugh out loud, othes well up ( seriously )
There are some really uncomfortable decisions to make that either option doesn't feel right.
I've managed to unlock 4 of the 6 endings and have been blown away with all of them, but i've yet to get to the games " true ending "
It truely is a MASTERPIECE. It's instantly become one of my all time favourite games. I've put nearly 50 hours into the game and still have more to discover. BRILLIANT.
